The Knives

I make three blade profiles for various uses.

Sloyd

These are designed for carving soft woods like basswood. The spine is 0.063" thick with a flat bevel to the edge.

Long Sloyd

This blade has a little more length for larger carving pieces when you need to reach a little further.

The wide blade provides more leverage for heavier cuts. It works well in a roughing out role or when material needs to be removed quickly.

I'll begin with this blade after axe work, then switch to the Sloyd for more detailed control.

Wide Blade

Gouge

Thin Blades

The Sloyd is 2 3/8" long and 1/8" thick, tapered thinner at the tip. The bevel is 25 degrees with a slight hollow grind. Handle wood is your choice of cherry, walnut, maple, white oak, apple, or osage orange.

This is a shallow sweep gouge. I designed this specifically for hollowing spoons. It has a finger nail shape to navigate the bowl of a spoon.
